National soma research symposiums

What is the National SOMA Research Symposium?

The Student Osteopathic Medical Association hosts two research symposiums annually, unfolding in both the fall and spring. These symposiums offer an inclusive platform for SOMA members to present their research endeavors and potentially earn national recognition along with monetary rewards.

Our application process is straightforward and accessible. Participants are invited to submit a concise abstract of 250 words or less, providing an overview of their research. A thoughtful review by the symposium committee follows, and successful applicants are extended invitations to share their work through oral presentations and posters at the symposium.

Research projects are distinguished in four distinct categories:

  1. Clinical Research
  2. Case Reports
  3. Basic Science
  4. Public Health

Our emphasis is on fostering an environment that encourages collaboration, sharing insights, and celebrating the diverse contributions within osteopathic medicine. The symposium not only serves as a stage for intellectual exchange but also as a forum for acknowledging and appreciating the valuable work of our SOMA community members. Join us in elevating the conversation and contributing to the collective knowledge base in a professional yet welcoming setting.

Why should I enter my research?

Entering your research in the symposium is a fantastic opportunity to amplify the reach of your work on a national scale, enhancing its visibility and recognition within the medical community. It serves as a valuable platform for showcasing the significance of your contributions to the medical field.

By participating, you not only gain the chance to present your research but also to connect with fellow SOMA members from diverse backgrounds across the nation. This networking opportunity opens doors to collaboration, shared insights, and a broader understanding of the impactful work being done within the community.

Our symposium committee will diligently review and grade all abstracts and presentations. The top three winners in each category receive notable recognition, with their research showcased prominently on the SOMA Research website. As a testament to the merit of your work, you’ll also be awarded a monetary prize.

Participating in the research symposium is not just about personal recognition; it’s about contributing to the collective knowledge base, building meaningful connections, and positioning your research for broader impact and appreciation. Join us in elevating your research journey to new heights!

How do I participate?

To participate in the symposium, keep an eye on your email, SOMA Weekly, and National SOMA Instagram as we’ll be sharing the exact date with all SOMA members. When submissions open, it’s a straightforward process through Google Forms. You’ll need to submit your abstract along with details about the authors, as well as a headshot.

We usually start accepting abstracts a few months prior to the symposium date to allow ample time for edits and review. After the review process, we’ll promptly notify students of their acceptance status shortly after the deadline.

If your submission is successful, you’ll receive an official email inviting you to join us on symposium day. At this point, you’ll be asked to prepare a poster representing your research and a concise oral presentation.

We’re looking forward to your participation and the opportunity to showcase the diverse and impactful research contributions within the SOMA community. Keep an eye on your inbox for updates and let’s make your symposium experience a rewarding one!
