GEMS For Health Professional Students

The goal of the GEMS-HP Program is to provide summer research opportunities in basic and translational research in the areas of Heart, Lung and Blood Diseases to students currently enrolled in Health Professional training including, but not limited to, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant and Public Health. The overarching goal of the GEMS-HP Program is to support the development of future biomedical scientists by providing them with research opportunities and exposure to the realistic lifestyle of biomedical research. Therefore we are looking for students who plan to pursue a lifelong career in biomedical research. Students must already be enrolled in a health professional program during the summer that they participate in GEMS-HP. Students who were recently accepted to a health professional programs but will not start that program until the following fall semester are not eligible for the GEMS-HP Program. Next year, the GEMS-HP program will run for 10 weeks, from June 1, 2022 through August 5, 2022, and selected GEMS-HP participants must be able to attend for all 10 weeks. To get the maximum benefit from the program, GEMS-HP students will be expected to commit full-time the program and will not be allowed to take extended vacation or days off during the program period.

This eight-week mentored, summer research program is designed to support medical students in developing their interests in research and health-related careers, particularly in clinical and translational research. Harvard-Longwood Short-Term Research Training in Vascular Surgery (NIH-T35)

Seven medical student research fellowships are available for 10-12 weeks of summer research training in molecular and cell biology, biomechanics, coagulation and thrombosis, and angiogenesis, with a focus on clinically relevant problems such as atherogenesis, intimal hyperplasia, prosthetic/host interactions and thrombosis. Trainees will pursue a program of intense research activity for a minimum NIH mandatory requirement of 8 weeks and an additional week in the beginning for the onboarding process. This training program is designed to provide medical students with an initial exposure to vascular surgery research.

The First-Year Medical Student Program is a 10-week program that offers hands-on experience in biomedical, translational or clinical research. Students who have completed their first year of medical school are eligible to apply.

Students are matched with a mentor from MD Anderson’s research or clinical faculty. Participants work alongside the mentor in a lab or clinic on projects designed by faculty to reflect current research. Workshops and lectures provide opportunities to connect with faculty, residents, postdoctoral and clinical fellows, and other participants. Through the program, students assess goals related to careers in cancer research and patient care. The program culminates with a symposium in which participants present talks and posters on their research projects to peers and faculty.

Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) Program

The MSTAR Program provides medical students with an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics, with the mentorship of top experts in the field. This program introduces students to research and academic experiences early in their training that they might not otherwise have during medical school. Positive experiences in the MSTAR program have led many physicians-in-training to pursue academic careers in aging, ranging from basic science to clinical research to health services research. They have joined the growing cadre of physicians and scientists whose specialized knowledge and skills are in great demand as our population ages.

Students participate in an eight- to twelve-week (or 2-3 months, depending on the training site) structured research, clinical, and didactic program in geriatrics, appropriate to their level of training and interests. Research projects are offered in basic, translational, clinical, or health services research relevant to older people. Most scholars will do their training and research during the summer months. They will also be invited to submit an abstract to present a poster at the Annual Meeting of the American Geriatrics Society.

DIVRO Summer Internship Program

NEI’s mission is to conduct and support research that helps prevent and treat eye diseases and other vision disorders. We believe that increasing diversity in the field of vision research will help us better tackle these challenges.

Scientific Summer Student Program

The summer program at the NIAMS is a stimulating and rewarding experience that provides an opportunity for you to work side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. Intramural investigators pursue diverse biomedical research projects that include fundamental analyses of protein structure and function, cell biology, signal transduction, gene regulation, tissue development and differentiation, and genetics and immunology. HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program at the NYC Health Department is one of the oldest and largest public health traineeships in the country

For over 60 years, HRTP has provided the opportunity for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students to experience some of the real-life challenges of public health. By working on current relevant public health issues under the close supervision and mentorship of experienced professionals, students apply classroom learning to practical problems in a closely matched practicum. In the process, they learn critical skills needed to excel in the field.

- The Summer Opportunities Program is designed to provide students with hands-on cancer research experience for 10 weeks over the summer. The Silberstein Pediatric Orthopedics Research Fellowship
- The Silberstein Research Fellowship, named in honor of Dr. Charles E. Silberstein, is a fellowship program for students in the first year of medical school seeking an early start to clinical experience in the orthopaedic field. This is a two-to three-month commitment during the summer. Fellows will work with the pediatric orthopaedic surgery faculty and the Poggi research fellow to bring a project to substantial completion and eventual publication.

Strong Children’s Research Center (SCRC) Summer Training Program
- The program provides trainees with extensive contact with research mentors, their staffs of investigators and supporting personnel who guide the research project and serve as role models and provide career direction. - Each summer, students are selected from a nationwide competition to join SRTP. Each student is assigned to a specific MGH laboratory, clinical site, health policy, or health services research area where they undertake an original research project under the mentorship and guidance of a Mass General Hospital (MGH) investigator. Vanderbilt University Student Research Training Program in Kidney Disease
- Vanderbilt’s Student Research Training Program in Kidney Disease provides medical students a unique opportunity to work with experts in clinical or basic science research focused on kidney disease. This program is part of the Medical Student Research Program in Diabetes funded by the National Institutes of Health through the NIDDK. Each student will have a project and present his/her findings at a scientific symposium involving medical students across the country. In addition, medical students are exposed to clinical nephrology through opportunities to shadow physicians in the clinic and on rounds at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A seminar series on topics relevant to kidney disease and careers in nephrology introduces medical students to the exciting clinical and research opportunities available in nephrology.

Summer Oncology Research Fellowship
- This program is intended to provide the highest quality experience for first-year medical school students pursuing interests in oncology research. While the program has traditionally been designed for students who have completed their first year of medical school, highly qualified undergraduates majoring in the health science fields may be considered. Faculty mentors are located both at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and at the USC Keck School of Medicine. The Summer Oncology Research Fellowship Program is traditionally awarded to students from universities and medical schools throughout the United States. Prior candidates have been exceptional students.

MSK 2023 Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship
- This summer program exposes students to the unique MSK scientific environment. Medical students, who are between the first and second years of school, work on research projects under the mentorship of MSK faculty members. While pursuing their research activities, students attend programs led by preeminent cancer researchers and innovators in cancer care. In this way, students gain exposure to the rigors of scientific investigation within the context of an academic cancer center, with an emphasis on precision medicine. Launched in 1977, this program has enabled over 1,400 medical students to contribute to the research enterprise of a premier academic medical center. The program aims to enhance the students’ knowledge about cancer and to stimulate research careers in this discipline.
